Search Is the Real Interface
Two thirds of the people your answer helps will never see the homepage.
Sixty-eight percent of traffic here arrives on a specific question from a search engine, reads one answer and leaves. That is not a failure of engagement. That is the product working exactly as intended.
Design for the Arrival, Not the Session
The person landing on a three-year-old thread needs three things immediately: which answer worked, whether it is still current, and what version it applied to. Everything else on that page is decoration.
Titles Are the Index
A question titled “help please urgent” is invisible to the archive forever. We rewrite titles aggressively, and it is the single most valuable moderation action we take.
Old Threads Need Maintenance
An accepted answer from 2029 may now be wrong. Tag maintainers add dated notes to answers that have aged rather than deleting them, so a reader can see both the original reasoning and what changed.
The Consequence for How We Rank
Nothing here is sorted by recency alone. A four-year-old answered question beats a fresh unanswered one in every list we build, because the archive is what people actually came for.
